Select stART : Ridiculous Fishing Edition

Hello, everyone. Welcome to the first entry of Select stART. What's Select stART? It's where I talk about video game art in both broad and specific terms, whether that be the visuals of a game, concept art relating to a game, or some fan art!

This week is a little game for iOS. RIDICULOUS FISHING. In this game, you guessed it, you do some fishing. The controls are pretty simple. You cast your lure and use the gyroscope to dodge fish, trying to get as far as you can. Once you reach your limit or you hit a fish, you reel your line back in, capturing as many fish as possible, while avoiding all the jellyfish. But that's not the ridiculous part.

The ridiculous part happens when your lure reaches your boat. ALL the fish go flying in the air, and it's up to you to tap the screen furiously in order to shoot them out of the sky. Why? Because that's how you get your money, dummy! Then you spend that money to get crazier upgrades and guns to capture fancier fish and shoot those fish out of the sky, ad nauseam.

     The art is also ridiculous.

Composed of cell shaded polygons in almost a "pixel art" fashion, the style is nothing short of adorably clever. Vibrant colors and complimentary color palettes aren't just there to be pretty, but enhance the gameplay, making it easier for the player to digest. Just take a look.

SHOOT ALL THOSE FEEEEESH!

The UI is also pretty hot. Simple, elegant, and interesting in spots. (Sorry, I'm a sucker for good UI.)

There's a Twitter in the game. It's practically useless, but goofy in a good way.
I only have two issues with the game, and they're both art related. One, I dislike the music and sounds. The pseudo-8bit nature of it was kinda fun at first, but after a while, I just muted it. Sometimes I'll turn it up when I'm shooting fish. And two, I wish there were more areas to visit. The game is only 3 bucks, so I can't fault it for being so short, but the style of it all is so great that I just want more variety.
